Coaching practise and supervision  - Feb – 2011 until Jun 2011

Coaching is a versatile, high impact tool and is increasingly being used in the workplace to grow and release potential, increase motivation and boost productivity. Coaching is seen as a significant intervention to create a capable and resilient work force able to adapt to new challenges and thrive in today’s tough global economic climate.

This programme was originally developed in response to a specific client’s requirement to develop internal coaching capability across a sector.  Now we are opening up the programme to all organisations and individuals.  This is an exciting opportunity to develop leader coaching skills and to work with others from a variety of organisations to share learning and best practise.  Developing coaching as a key enabler to your business strategy can:

  • Drive productivity and efficiency.
  • Increase customer service and customer satisfaction
  • Enable culture change
  • Create flexible and resilient cultures
  • Retain and develop top talent.

Programme Philosophy and approach

Performance coaching can be defined as an informed, structured dialogue that provides insights into personal strengths and development areas, aimed at enhancing and developing individuals’ skills, behavioral impact and knowledge within the business context.

The CIPD (2005) suggest the following to define coaching, which aligns to the philosophy of the programme:-

  • It consists of one-to-one developmental discussions.
  • It provides people with feedback on both their strengths and weaknesses.
  • It is aimed at specific issues/areas.
  • It is time-bounded.
  • It focuses on improving performance and developing/enhancing individuals skills.
  • Coaching activities have both organisational and individual goals.
  • It focuses on current and future performance/behaviour.
  • It is a skilled activity.

To ensure the aims and objectives of the programme are achieved, the programme philosophy is grounded in relevant theory and significant coaching practice. Given the impact coaching can have on individuals, the programme is underpinned by a robust professional approach.

The philosophy of the programme is therefore distinctive, as opportunities for coaching practice and feedback are interwoven throughout the course.

Programme Aims

  • Develop highly competent professional leader coaches who develop intra and interpersonal awareness, develop a coaching approach as a way of being and are equipped to unlock talent and leverage leadership and performance.
  •  Develop leader coaches who have a core knowledge and understanding of the coaching context, with the ability to locate their coaching interventions within a business, relationship and psychological perspective.
  • Develop the learner’s ability to select and apply psychological approaches through the engagement with relevant theory and practice.
  • Develop from a reflective to a reflexive practitioner, with regard to coaching interventions.
  • To enable the learner to practice ethically and professionally and to develop their   personal identity as a coach.

The Programme

The Advanced diploma is a modularised programme taught over nine months and comprises 6 days formal teaching delivered in 3 two day modules.

Programme Structure

The model of practice, feedback and reflection is sustained throughout the programme. The developing coach coaches and is coached by a peer and also coaches individuals from their own organisation. Learning through experience is facilitated through structured feedback and reflection and this can often provide the most significant learning.

The programme considers theoretical and practical aspects of coaching. There is significant theoretical underpinning such as relevant psychological skills and concepts and learning theory.

Coaching theory has tended to lag behind coaching practice and this programme is distinctive in the use of such academic theory. As the tutors are experienced practising coaches, the theory will inform practice and vice versa.

The ethical behaviour and professionalism of the coach is fundamental to the coaching programme which adheres to the ethics and standards of the main accreditation bodies: The International Coach Federation, The European Mentoring and Coaching Council and the Association for Coaching.

The programme is also mapped against the International Coach Federation competencies and the Executive Development Centre is a member of the Association of Coaching. This ensures that the programme has professional credibility backed by academic rigour.

Each module is supported by a teaching and learning plan which outlines the process and frameworks for learning, directed learning and independent reading.

Assessment

  1. The programme culminates in the submission of a ‘coaching portfolio’ along with a 2000 word critique of the learning and development experience and a reflective piece demonstrating your professional competence as a coach.

Induction

An induction to the programme and Northumbria University is provided one week prior to beginning the programme. This provides an opportunity to discuss expectations, explore issues relating to the mechanics of the programme and provide practical help related to study skills and assignment writing. You will be allocated a personal tutor who is available to you for personal guidance on a one-to-one basis.

Why should I embark on an academic coaching qualification as opposed to a non-academic qualification?

The market for coaching and coach development has grown rapidly over the past few years, with no standard qualification or accreditation process. There are a number of independent accreditation bodies who all provide some direction towards setting appropriate standards, but no formally agreed industry approach. As a developing coach, it can be hard to choose which course or accreditation body to align to. The academic route provides a reassurance that the learning and teaching approach is robust and adheres to national and international standards of higher education. Whatever the evolution of the coaching industry, you can be sure that an academic qualification will stand the test of time and provide you with the necessary credibility as professional standards continue to develop.

Who is the Advanced Diploma In Leadership and Performance Coaching aimed at?

This programme is aimed at individuals who want to create greater impact in their organisation though coaching leaders for enhanced performance.  Participants are likely to be leaders themselves responsible for the development of their own management teams or HR/OD professionals looking to create internal coaching capability.

What makes the Newcastle Business School programme the one to choose?

We believe that a coaching programme should address a number of areas to be effective. These are:

  • Your personal development: as part of the programme you will embark on a journey of self-discovery and self-development supported by peer coaching, group exercises and personal reflective practice.

  • The context of coaching: We believe it is important to always keep in mind what we are coaching for, whose agenda we are working on and the applications for coaching. We explore when to coach and the boundaries with counselling, consulting and therapy. The course is run entirely by experienced coaches working in the executive coaching field and with real-world experience of working as coaches within organisations. We bring the organisational context and business mindedness of the programme to life through discussion and examples.

  • Coaching skills, tools and techniques: Coaching is a practical skill that can be learnt but requires considerable experience doing it for real to become skilled. To develop your skills and competence in this area, we will set you up with a peer coaching relationship supporting another student through their personal development process. At the end of the formal taught section of the course, there is a 4 month period of coaching practice to consolidate the learning supported by coaching supervision sessions.

  • Psychological mindedness: Although coaches come from a variety of backgrounds, we believe that understanding the psychological underpinning of personal development is critical to effective coaching. A key part of the programme is to support your development and understanding of a variety of psychological approaches such as person-centred, behavioural and cognitive.
